The 12-year-old shooter at a South Carolina middle school has been arrested and charged with the murder of another 12-year-old student.

The Greenville County Sheriff's office confirmed last Friday to the local news outlet, Greenville News, that the 12-year-old victim, Jamari Cortez Bonaparte Jackson, died as a result of gunshot wounds to his chest after a classmate shot him last Thursday.

Shortly after the shooting, authorities announced that murder charges would be brought against the 12-year-old shooter, who has not yet been publicly named.

The shooting happened at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville, South Carolina, last Thursday afternoon. Authorities explained that the two boys knew each other, yet the motive for the shooting is not clear. According to reports, authorities were alerted of an incident at the school at about 12:30 p.m. when a school resource officer called in emergency backup after the shooting took place.

Over 100 deputies from offices all around the surrounding area arrived at the scene. After searching the area, authorities found the student hiding underneath the deck of a nearby home. The owner of the home, Elaine Griffin, shared with authorities that the student knocked on her door and explained to her that a shooting had occurred at his school and that he needed to get in touch with his father. Sensing that the boy was nervous and scared, she called the police.

“They found him up under there and he told them that the gun was up under some wood we had under the deck,” Griffin shared with local news outed, WMBF. In doorbell camera footage Griffin shared with police, the 12-year-old can be seen being pulled from the home and taken into police custody.

Following news of the shooting and the age of both the victim and the shooter, the Tanglewood community vocalized their disbelief and shock. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis shared in a statement, “My heart breaks for this young boy’s family, and my prayers are with them tonight.” Sheriff Lewis added, “I will be praying for the other young boy who pulled the trigger and his family. I cannot fathom what would cause someone to do this to another human being and especially at that age, but I know it’s a situation where we all need to turn to God.” The sheriff went on to plead with parents to speak with their children about the incident and the impacts of gun violence.

Greenville County Schools superintendent Dr. Burke Royster also shared his condolences through a statement detailing the school community’s loss. “This is an absolute tragedy,” Royster shared. “And we will continue to do whatever we can to support his family and the Tanglewood community as they mourn the young life that was lost today.”

Royster went on to thank the school staff, local law enforcement, outside police agencies, and emergency response resources in the surrounding area for their rapid response.

Dr. Graysen Walles, the principal of Tanglewood Middle School, also issued a statement on behalf of his school. "My heart goes out to the family of our student who passed away, and my prayers are with them,” Walles shared. “Our entire Tanglewood family is hurting with this news and from the events that took place today. Our school is mourning and will work together to heal and process this tragedy."

Along with the murder charge, the 12-year-old was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm on school property, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a person under the age of 18. The shooter is currently being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice, Columbia.
