The wife of anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, 46, detailed her husband’s alleged murder attempt against her in great detail in a restraining order petition filed in the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney’s office in March. The couple are Maui residents who were visiting Oahu to celebrate the wife’s birthday.

In the legal document, the wife, who wishes to have her name not made public as a victim of domestic violence, accused her husband of attempted murder while they were hiking on Oahu’s Pali Lookout hiking trail, a well-known trail in Hawaii. The plaintiff claims her husband had accused her of having an affair and was overcome with “extreme jealousy.”

In the petition, the wife said that her husband asked her to join him near the edge of a cliff for a selfie right before the attack. But she balked, and in the petition said she “declined and began to walk back.”

The plaintiff further recounted in the petition, “When I got close to Gerhardt, Gerhardt grabbed me by my upper arms and started pushing me back towards the cliff edge. He was yelling something to the effect of, ‘Get back over there, I’m so f**king sick of you!’ and continued to push me. … If I had fallen off the cliff, I would have likely died.”

Konig’s wife, in the petition, accused her husband of attempting to drug her with an unknown substance and wrote that they struggled as he tried to inject her and that he had two vials of the substance plus a second syringe at the time of the attack.

Numerous people on the popular hiking trail were on hand to witness the attack. One witness, who was quoted in the affidavit, told authorities she heard the woman yell, “He is trying to kill me. He is hitting me in the head with a rock.” The injured wife of Konig was able to run to the hikers, who then called 911 and helped move her along the trail for assistance.

The woman was taken to the hospital by EMS where she was reported at the time to be in “serious but stable condition.”

In the petition for a restraining order, Konig’s wife told the court that her husband accused her of having an affair and had been trying to control and monitor her communications since December. In the petition, she also accused Konig of sexual abuse and assault.

A judge granted the restraining order to cover the woman and her two children, plus some other family members.

Police said that after about seven hours following the attack, they found the suspect and pursued him. The anesthesiologist was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, and he was indicted the next day by a grand jury for allegedly attacking his wife on the trail.

“This indictment reflects the serious nature of crime that is alleged [in] this case,” prosecuting attorney Steve Alm said in a statement. “Domestic abuse cannot be tolerated. Our office is committed to ensuring that justice is served for the victim and that the defendant is held accountable.”

The Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney’s office reported the arrest and said Konig allegedly tried to kill his wife by violently hitting his wife’s head with a rock and attempting to drug her with numerous syringes, all next to a dangerous cliff.

Konig is being held without bail.
