The supernova celebrity couple that was once called Brangelina burned out in a messy public divorce, with allegations of abuse brought by Angelina Jolie against Brad Pitt. Now, two years after filing a lawsuit against the FBI related to her claims of her ex-husband’s abuse, Ms. Jolie has dropped her suit against the government. Attorneys for Ms. Jolie filed a legal motion to dismiss the case in September with prejudice in a Los Angeles courtroom.
In September 2016, the FBI launched an investigation into Mr. Pitt’s behavior in the infamous jet incident that led in part to the couple’s divorce. Under a 2022 Freedom of Information Act request, Jolie used the moniker “Jane Doe” and requested the FBI documents about its investigation into the flight – and fight – on Sept. 14, 2016, where Jolie’s and Pitt’s children were present.
Ms. Jolie accused Mr. Pitt, her then-husband, of violent behavior on the private jet, including choking her, hitting her, and frightening their children while on the private plane. Only six days after this event, Ms. Jolie filed for divorce.
During the flight, Ms. Jolie claimed in court documents, Mr. Pitt was drunk and “grabbed her by the head, shaking her,” and shook her roughly over a fight over one of their children. She also claimed her then-husband was so angry that he punched the ceiling numerous times and told the kids, when they asked about the fight and if their mother was okay, “No, she’s not OK, she’s ruining this family, she’s crazy.”
Initially, the FBI released a statement about its investigation into Mr. Pitt’s alleged behavior at the time of the accusations, saying, “This author provided both AUSAs copies of a probable cause statement related to this incident. After reviewing the document, representative of the United States Attorney’s Office discussed the merits of this investigation with the case agent. It was agreed by all parties that criminal charges in this case would not be pursued due to several factors.”
This decision not to pursue legal charges against her ex-husband led to Ms. Jolie’s filing a lawsuit against the FBI.
Court documents show that Ms. Jolie wanted to see details about the investigation against Mr. Pitt since the FBI did not choose to press criminal charges against him.
With the case dismissed, both Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt will be liable for paying their own legal fees.
Currently, since Jolie and Pitt had their divorce ‘bifurcated’ in 2019, they are both legally single, but they are still not legally divorced. The couple is also in another legal battle over Ms. Jolie’s sale of her portion of the French winery Miraval, which Mr. Pitt is against and says is illegal due to their agreement.
In that case, Mr. Pitt said Ms. Jolie sold to an “aggressive third-party competitor.”
