A woman traveling through LAX has filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department after she says she was wrongfully arrested due to a case of mistaken identity.

Bethany K. Farber, 30, was traveling through LAX on April 16th, 2021, when she was stopped by TSA and asked about a warrant out for her arrest in Texas. The airport officials were looking for a woman by the name of Bethany Farber and arrested the 30-year-old instead.

Farber insisted that she didn't have a warrant out for her arrest and had never even been to Texas. Despite this, Farber details that she was put into handcuffs and taken to the local police station. From there, she was transferred to Lynwood Women's Jail where she spent the next 13 days.

Farber shared with local news outlet KTTV that she had asked the officials to check her passport and other documents to prove that she was not who they were looking for. Despite her pleas, authorities continued to arrest her.

After hiring attorneys in both Texas and LA, Farber’s legal team was able to show that she was not in Texas at the time the crime had occurred. After her legal team presented the cell phone GPS evidence, Farber was eventually released.

Farber described her time behind bars as harrowing. According to her lawsuit, Farber suffered “severe stress, anxiety, emotional injury and mental anguish” as a result of her wrongful arrest. The complaint details that inmates were "trying to touch her person, her hair and asking for favors she couldn’t fulfill."

The 30-year-old announced her lawsuit alongside her lawyer Rodney Biggs during a press conference. Biggs shared that he believes Farber was detained for so long because the judge deemed her a flight risk. Despite this, he contends that had officials done their due diligence, the unwarranted arrest could’ve been avoided.

"The fact no one checked her middle name, her birth date. No information representing her person… they didn’t even check basic information that Bethany was not the other Bethany Farber," Biggs detailed.

The mug shot of Bethany Farber who committed the crime in Texas was later revealed. The Farber who had an outstanding warrant for her arrest sported short dark brown hair as opposed to the blonde, long-haired 30-year-old who was arrested in LAX.

As a result of her unwarranted arrest, Farber details that her family underwent insurmountable stress as they sought to get the 30-year-old released from jail. In a press release, Farber's legal team shared, "When her grandmother found out, she suffered a stress-induced stroke that ultimately took her life while Bethany was still locked up in jail, never giving her the chance to say goodbye."

As a result of her experience, Farber details that she suffered emotional distress for having been wrongly incarcerated. Her suit is seeking $2.5 million in damages and names the City of Los Angeles, LAPD and LAX police.
