Professional athlete Rashee Rice, a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Theodore “Teddy” Knox, a cornerback for SMU, have been hit with a lawsuit following a multi-vehicle crash in Dallas, Texas, on March 30th. The lawsuit, filed by Edvard Petrovskiy and Irina Gromova in Dallas County Court on Thursday, is seeking over $1 million in actual damages and $10 million in punitive damages.
Rice, who was driving a rented Lamborghini Urus, and Knox, who was driving a Chevrolet Corvette owned by Rice, are both named as defendants in the lawsuit.
Petrovskiy and Gromova allege that Rice and Knox engaged in reckless driving behavior, racing their vehicles at speeds significantly exceeding the legal limit, ultimately causing a six-vehicle collision. Moments prior to the crash, both men were traveling at a speed surpassing 100 mph and subsequently fled from the scene of the accident. Both athletes are facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault and collision involving serious bodily injury.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs sustained severe injuries, including brain trauma, lacerations requiring stitches, internal bleeding, along with other injuries as a result of the crash. They are seeking compensation for medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, loss of earning capacity, mental anguish, and property damage.
Despite the legal proceedings, neither the NFL nor the Kansas City Chiefs have taken any actions against Rice at this time. SMU has suspended Knox pending further investigation.
