“Chrisley Knows Best” Reality Stars Sentenced to a Combined 19 Years in Prison
Todd and Julie Chrisley of the USA Network reality series “Chrisley Knows Best” were found guilty of conspiracy to defraud banks out of about $30 million in fraudulent loans. Also, according to CNN, they were found guilty of “several tax crimes, including attempting to defraud the Internal Revenue Service.”
Todd Chrisley has been sentenced to 12 years in prison with three years of supervised release. Julie Chrisley has been sentenced to seven years in prison with three years of supervised release. Additionally, their accountant has been sentenced to three years in prison with three years supervised release for filing fraudulent tax returns for the Chrisleys. Together, they had conspired to defraud the Internal Revenue Service and evade paying taxes. According to NBC News, prosecutors had suggested that Todd Chrisley be sentenced to 17.5 to about 22 years and Julie Chrisley be sentenced to around 10 to 12.5 years, saying their “arrogance merits special consideration.”
According to the Department of Justice, the Chrisleys were able to get these loans by “submitting false bank statements, audit reports and financial statements. The money was used to buy luxury cars, designer clothes, real estate and travel, a DOJ press release stated” (CNN).
“The Chrisleys have built an empire based on the lie that their wealth came from dedication and hard work,” prosecutors wrote. “The jury’s unanimous verdict sets the record straight: Todd and Julie Chrisley are career swindlers who have made a living by jumping from one fraud scheme to another, lying to banks, stiffing vendors, and evading taxes at every corner.”
The Chrisleys’ lawyers argued against the prosecutors’ sentencing guidelines, saying the “government has vastly overstated the amounts of loss, restitution and forfeiture.” They also said that neither of the Chrisleys “purposely sought to inflict the harm upon the banks" and that Todd Chrisley had planned to pay back the loans.
The Chrisleys plan to appeal their sentences. "Yesterday was a difficult day for the Chrisley family," Alex Little said in a statement to CBS News the day after sentencing. "But Todd and Julie are people of faith, and that faith gives them strength as they appeal their convictions. Their trial was marred by serious and repeated errors, including the government lying to jurors about what taxes the couple paid. Based on these issues, we are optimistic about the road ahead."
Savannah Chrisley, 25, now has custody of her brother Grayson, 16, and niece Chloe, 10, as mentioned on an episode of her podcast “Unlocked,” which was released the day of the trial.
“I may come home without both of my parents. That’s what the chances are,” the “Growing Up Chrisley” alum said. “That’s the likelihood, and that’s my new normal.
“I come home Tuesday, and I have custody of a 16-year-old and a 10-year-old, and we spend our first Thanksgiving not as a family.”
She goes on to say that taking over custody of Grayson and Chloe has been the “hardest part” of her parents’ legal battle.
“ trying to navigate how you teach two younger children who aren’t fully developed yet and … get them to understand the circumstances,” she said on her podcast. “That’s a really, really difficult thing.”
Savannah Chrisley posted the following quote on her social media: “Noah didn’t stop building the ark to explain himself to everyone who doubted and hated on him. Keep building your ark. The rain will do the talking.”
The reality show “Chrisley Knows Best” premiered in 2014. The latest reports are that the show and its spinoff, “Growing Up Chrisley,” have both been canceled. It is not certain what is going to happen with the show now. Episodes of Chrisley Knows Best shot before the trial might still premiere sometime in 2023.
