New York State officials are continuing their investigation into suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann. This week, officials have released more details about evidence linking him to a series of murders along the Long Beach area.

The thorough investigation came to a head after agents arrested Heuermann late last week near his Midtown architecture consulting firm. Officials later announced their confidence in apprehending the right man.

Heuermann, a 59-year-old husband and father to two adult children, has been linked to the murder of three women and is the prime suspect of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. These four women were dubbed the “Gilgo Four” and were known to be sex workers, frequenting clients in the area.

The remains of the three women, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, were recovered in 2010. Their remains were among the 11 sets of human remains located on Long Island's South Shore. It is not believed that Heuermann is responsible for the other bodies, but much remains unclear on how the nearly dozen bodies wound up in the area.

The latest reports indicate strong evidence tying Heuermann to the crimes. Ray Tierney, the Suffolk County District Attorney, shared with reporters at CNN, “We have a description of the last individual who saw the final victim, Amber Costello, alive that matches that of this defendant, who has a rather unique physical appearance,” adding, “We have phone evidence, and we also have that DNA evidence.”

According to reports, Heuermann’s DNA was found on at least one of the remains. His wife's DNA was found on at least two bodies.

Authorities were able to obtain this DNA match after they collected samples of Heuermann’s DNA found on a pizza crust discarded in a public trash can. It's this DNA that's believed to have been the break in the case confirming a connection between Heuermann and the victims. Officials have confirmed that the DNA of Heuermann’s wife was likely transfer DNA as she’s believed to have been out of town during the time of the murders. Authorities believed that Heuermann likely connected with his victims and killed them when his wife was away traveling. Authorities are continuing to investigate his wife's previous activities in order to determine if Heuermann is responsible for any other murders.

Authorities have since obtained a search warrant of Heuermann’s home, electronics, and at least one storage unit Heuermann kept in Amityville, Long Island. Officials later revealed that the New York architect also held a storage unit states away in South Carolina which has also been searched. It’s reported that police in South Carolina received a request from New York officials to seize a vehicle belonging to Heuermann, a Chevrolet Avalanche.

Earlier this week authorities revealed that Heuermann had a cache of over 200 weapons hidden behind a locked door in his home along with a life-size doll in a glass case.

Heuermann's search history has also raised eyebrows as the 59-year-old queried search engines for topics including torture porn, child porn, and updates on the Gilgo Beach murders. Released internet searches include queries such as “Why could law enforcement not trace the calls made by the Long Island serial killer,” “Why hasn't the Long Island serial killer been caught,” and “Cop launches Gilgo Beach homicide investigation task force.”

Officials share that Heuermann also searched for various podcasts and documentaries covering the murders along Gilgo Beach.

In addition to his questionable search history, officials detail they have surveillance footage showing Heuermann’s purchase of burner phones that were used to get in touch with female escorts throughout the Long Beach area.

The case gained renewed intention in 2022 after a task force dedicated to solving the homicides was launched. Prior to the task force, there was sporadic public interest in the case, helping keep the murders in the public eye.

With this sporadic public interest came the scrutiny that the murders were not getting the attention they deserved by law enforcement because many of the women killed were sex workers who had clients located along the area. Shannan Gilbert became the face of these women after her remains were found on December 11. Police have since released audio of Gilbert’s 911 call telling authorities “there's somebody after me.” Along with the 911 call, and the recovery of her body, officials believe that her death was a tragic accident and not a homicide. Additionally, Gilbert's death did not match the circumstances of the other woman who had been found wrapped in burlap sacks.

As authorities continue to investigate the Gilgo Beach murders and the potential connection to other murders, Heuermann remains behind bars and has been denied bail based on what the judge called the "extreme depravity of the allegations."
