FBI Confirms Skeletal Remains Belong to Brian Laundrie, Questions Mount Against Laundrie Family
Dental records of skeletal remains found at the Carlton Reserve are those of Brian Laundrie, the FBI announced late Thursday.
The search for Laundrie sparked national and global attention after the 23-year-old was named a person of interest in the disappearance and later death of his 22-year-old fiancée Gabby Petito. The search for Laundrie lasted nearly a month; however, the discovery of Laundrie’s body brings more questions than answers to the case that rocked the nation.
Attorney for the Laundrie family, Steven Bertolino, shared a rare statement with the public confirming that Brian's parents Chris and Roberta Laundrie were informed of the positive identification. "We have no further comment at this time and we ask that you respect the Laundrie's privacy at this time," Bertolino shared. Bertolino later broke his silence on Good Morning America Friday morning when he gave anchor George Stephanopoulos insight on Brian’s state of mind when he came home from his monthslong cross-country adventure with Petito.
"Brian had been extremely upset, Chris and Roberta were extremely concerned about him, they expressed that to me. That when he walked out the door that evening, they wish they could have stopped him, they wish they could have you know, prevented him from going out, but he was intent on leaving. Chris said to me, I know in hindsight I couldn't stop him, but I just wish I could have," Bertolino shared.
In addition to the announcement of the skeletal remains that were found, investigators revealed they had found clothing consistent with the clothing Brian wore when he entered the Carlton Reserve on September 13th. Less than a week after Laundrie went missing, his fiancée's remains were found at the Bridger-Teton National Park in Wyoming. Following an autopsy, her death was ruled a homicide by manual strangulation. Along with clothing that matched Laundrie’s description, a notebook allegedly belonging to Laundrie was also found. Police spokesperson Josh Taylor shared with CNN that the notebook had not been opened but that it would be carefully processed for evidence.
Early on in the investigation of Petito’s disappearance and then later death, suspicion swirled around the family as the public accused them of withholding information about their son’s whereabouts. The family’s continued silence and limited communication through their attorney only fueled that suspicion. Brian’s sister, Cassie Laundrie, has been the only family member to speak out in regards to Gabby's death and her brother’s sudden disappearance. In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Cassie detailed the last moment she had with her brother on a family camping trip that took place days after Brian returned to his parent’s home without his fiancée. "We just went for a couple of hours and we ate dinner and had s'mores around the campfire and left, and there was nothing peculiar about it," Cassie explained. "There was no feeling of grand goodbye. There was no nothing."
Cassie has clued the public in on a potential familial divide as she has publicly stated that her parents were not communicating with her and that she was not being represented by the family attorney. In the early days of her brother’s unknown whereabouts, Cassie urged her brother to “just come forward and get us out of this horrible mess."
As authorities begin to comb over the remains, it is yet to be seen whether or not officials will be able to uncover how Laundrie died.
