TV personality Kelly Clarkson and her now ex-husband Brandon Blackstock have finalized their divorce this week.

After seven years together, the couple filed for divorce in June 2020 citing “irreconcilable differences.” Soon after filing, the duo quickly worked out a child custody agreement for the two children they shared, their 7-year-old daughter River Rose and a 5-year-old son Remington Alexander. Blackstock, who is the stepson of country legend Reba McEntire, also has two other children from a previous marriage, 17-year-old daughter Savannah and 13-year-old son Seth.

The pair first met while Clarkson was working with Rascal Flatts in the early 2000s. At the time, Blackstock was still married. The duo met again in 2012 when Blackstock was single, and after 10 months of dating, the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at Blackberry Farms in Tennessee.

Clarkson detailed that their marriage began to fall apart and that during quarantine, the couple quarreled often. After filing for divorce in 2020, the relationship continued to further sour as the duo began to dispute assets. A major point of contention was the couple’s Montana ranch, which Clarkson had long since wanted to sell.

Amid the divorce proceedings, Blackstock expressed his desire to keep the ranch in an effort to build on his ranching business. In August 2021, a judge ruled in favor of Blackstock, declaring that he would be required to pay maintenance costs for the ranch and that if he failed to do so Clarkson would be allowed to move forward with selling it. Later that year, Clarkson agreed to give Blackstock a 5.12% share of the property for a total of just over $900,000 of its estimated $17,750,000 value. Blackstone will continue living on the Montana property until June 2022 but will have to pay maintenance and utility fees to the tune of $12,000 a month. Clarkson will continue living in her LA home with her two children.

As part of the settlement, court documents show that Clarkson will have primary custody of the children. Clarkson has also agreed to pay just over $45,000 a month in child support for the kids until they reach the age of 18, graduate high school, or become self-supporting. Clarkson will also be paying $115,000 monthly in spousal support to her ex-husband until January 2024. Additionally, Clarkson has also been asked to pay a one-time tax-free fee of $1,326,1651.

Following news of the finalized divorce, Clarkson announced that she will be changing her name to Kelly Brianne to have a name that “fully reflects” who she is.

The “Piece by Piece'' singer has not shied away from what some have described as a long and drawn-out divorce settlement. Clarkson shared on her NBC holiday special "Kelly Clarkson Presents: When Christmas Comes Around," that between the pandemic and her divorce, the singer-turned-talk show host has gone through a rough period. "I’m gonna be real with y’all,’ she shared with viewers about her single, Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know). “When I wrote this next song, I was crying my face off, which happens even at Christmastime, everyone."

Clarkson went on to explain that she had written the song as a way to express her feelings and because “there aren’t many holiday songs for people feeling alone or lost or just plain sad."
