Minnesota Woman Sues After Dentist Performs Four Root Canals, Eight Crowns, 20 Fillings in Single Visit
A Minnesota woman says that a visit to her dentist was nothing short of a nightmare in her lawsuit filed on Dec. 21 in Hennepin County District Court, according to a recent report by the Star Tribune.
Minnesota resident Kathleen Wilson says Dr. Kevin Molldrem of Molldrem Family Dentistry in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, subjected her to four root canals, eight dental crowns, and 20 fillings all in a single visit in July 2020.
As a result of the invasive appointment, Wilson says she experienced “pain and suffering, embarrassment, emotional distress and disfigurement.”
In addition to the overwhelming dental work, Wilson says that Dr. Molldrem gave her “quantities of anesthesia well in excess of the recommended dosage” and that Dr. Molldrem and his team falsified records to conceal the excessive levels of anesthetic administered to her. The complaint details that the maximum dosage of anesthetic is 490 mg. During her visit, Molldrem administered 960 mg to Wilson.
Wilson accuses the dentist of negligence, claiming that his recklessness caused her disfigurement and other losses. Her lawsuit alleges, “This negligent work approximately caused significant injuries,” and the dentist failed “to create a care plan that would effectively address decay and tooth dissolution.”
Wilson’s claims of negligence are supported by the testimony of Dr. Avrum Goldstein. Dr. Goldstein is a Naples, Florida, dentist hired by Wilson’s legal team to review the treatment she received between July 7 and July 21 under the care of Dr. Molldrem.
Dr. Goldstein points out in his nine-page report that Wilson’s dentist engaged in various breaches of duty including trying to restore her teeth all in one visit. His affidavit noted that nearly all of her teeth had some sort of decay or erosion to them and that “Restoring all of her teeth does nothing to address her susceptibility to her disease, the likelihood of it continuing, and the possibility that her teeth will be lost.’’
He adds that Dr. Molldrem’s decision to complete all that dental work “in a single visit is impossible to achieve if each of these procedures is done properly.” The affidavit also notes that Wilson eventually went to another dentist to be treated for the restoration of lost teeth and recurring decay.
Wilson would go on to receive care at the University of Minnesota Dental School from May to September 2022 “in an attempt to stabilize her mouth.”
Dr. Goldstein's report maintains that "Katie required a slow, thoughtful, careful, and measured response to her disease. Trying to fill every hole in every tooth in her mouth in one visit is not only the antithesis of what was indicated, it is not humanly possible to achieve in an effective or constructive manner," emphasizing that it's "inconceivable" to repair 28 teeth in 5 1⁄2 hours.
Dr. Goldstein also opined on the dental trauma that Wilson faced while receiving treatment from Dr. Molldrem. He explains that patients have a "finite capacity for dental treatment" and that if the inadequate care she received continued and she ended up losing all her teeth and requiring implants, "all of the work that was done and all of the expense associated with it will have been for nothing."
According to Molldrem’s website, he says that he opened his practice "to provide the type of dental care for others as I would want for my own family." Molldrem would go on to open a second location in nearby Lakeville, Minnesota.
Wilson’s complaint indicates she is suing Molldrem for more than $50,000 in damages, in accordance with Minnesota court pleading rules. The actual amount she is seeking is likely much larger.
