Global music mogul and husband of Beyoncé, Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, filed a defamation lawsuit against a woman who claims he raped her when she was just 13 years old. Jay-Z, claims the woman, who initially sued him for rape but has since dropped her suit, is lying, and that she is using “false and malicious claims” for a big settlement.

Jay-Z’s suit, following the woman’s prior suit against him and Sean “Diddy” Combs, was filed in federal court in the Southern District of Alabama, in the geographic area where the woman, known in court papers as “Jane Doe,” resides.

The former plaintiff, although no longer suing, has not backed down from her claim of rape. “I felt intimidated and terrified at being confronted by these two individuals on my doorstep and that they knew my name and home address despite me being anonymous in the New York Action,” said the woman.

In court documents, the music mogul alleges his accuser and her lawyers are “soullessly motivated by greed.” Jay-Z is also suing “Jane Doe” and her attorneys for malicious prosecution, abuse of process and civil conspiracy.

Malicious prosecution refers to the filing of a lawsuit for an improper purpose and without grounds or probable cause. Similarly, abuse of process refers to the misuse of legal proceedings, and civil conspiracy charges can be applied when two or more individuals or entities collaborate to reach an unlawful goal that causes harm or damages to a third party.

Legal documents by Jay-Z claim the allegations brought against him by “Jane Doe” will deeply impact his personal life and professional career.

Jay-Z claims the allegations against him were “malevolent efforts to assassinate the impeccable and lifetime-earned character” of his life. He also alleges that his accuser “voluntarily admitted directly to” his “representatives” that there was no assault and that she said her lawyer “coerced” her to claim rape.

In December, a judge denied Jay-Z’s requests to dismiss the case and to strip “Jane Doe” of her anonymity. The judge criticized Jay-Z’s attorneys over the requests, saying that the team’s “relentless filing of combative motions…(were) inappropriate.”

In January, Jay-Z's attorneys again asked to have the case dismissed and to place sanctions against “Jane Doe’s” attorneys, claiming they found “several inconsistencies” in her accusations. The anonymous accuser, in a TV interview on NBC, said she did have some “inconsistencies” but that her claim of rape was accurate.

After the interview with NBC, “Jane Doe’s” attorney said, “Our client remains fiercely adamant that what she has stated is true, to the best of her memory.”

The current defamation case initiated by Jay-Z has its roots in a prior lawsuit filed by the anonymous woman against Jay-Z and Music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs. In that suit, “Jane Doe” alleged Jay-Z and Combs sexually assaulted her when she was 13 at an MTV Video Music Awards after-party in New York City in 2000. Jay-Z has repeatedly denied “Jane Doe’s” charges.

In a notice of voluntary dismissal, the anonymous accuser in February withdrew her lawsuit against Jay-Z and Diddy. The plaintiff said she may have dropped her case, but her claims of rape remain.

“Although I ultimately chose not to pursue them, I stand by my claims in the New York Action and believe that I had a meritorious claim against Jay-Z,” said the accuser.

Meanwhile, Diddy stands accused of sexual assault in over 40 active civil lawsuits. He has also been indicted on federal charges of racketeering and sex trafficking and is in prison awaiting trial. He has pleaded not guilty, with a trial scheduled for May.
