22-year-old Joshua Hall of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, is facing charges including one count of wire fraud and one count of identity theft after he allegedly pretended to be a member of former President Donald Trump's family in order to secure fraudulent election funds.

The 22-year-old is accused of posing as members of Trump’s extended family as a way to collect funding for a trump re-election organization, an organization that did not exist.

After Hall created the re-election organization in support of the former president, He went on to create several fake social media accounts under the name of prominent Trump family members. Hall also used photographs of these family members as he set up the fake social media accounts. Some of the family members he impersonated included Trump's youngest son, Barron Trump, and the president’s brother, Robert Trump.

After creating these accounts, Hall advertised his re-election organization on these social media accounts in order to gain an audience. As part of his political catfish scheme, Hall was able to secure more than 100,000 followers.

Manhattan District Attorney Audrey Strauss explains that Hall used these different social media accounts and successfully collected thousands of dollars in funding from donors all over the nation only to pocket the money for his personal use. Strauss adds, “We thank the FBI for their partnership in the investigation of this case, and we remain dedicated to rooting out and prosecuting fraud wherever we find it.”

In one post made under the fake account of Robert Trump, Hall posted that Robert Trump was running the re-election organization alongside Hall. The fundraising took place on a crowdfunding website that was officially closed down after Hall could not provide the proper documentation to authenticate his efforts.

In an interview with the New York Times, Hall explained that he had “no nefarious intentions” behind his operation. He explains that the fake social media accounts and fraudulent posts were an attempt “to rally up MAGA supporters and have fun."

According to the New York Times, a post made by Hall under the fake social media account of Trump's sister, Elizabeth Trump Grau, received a response from the actual former president’s social media account. President Trump responded to the post stating, “ Thank you Elizabeth.” Hall shared with the times, "I'm a big Trump supporter, but I'm thinking, 'He's got to know that that's a parody.' " Hall added, “ how does he not know.”

Hall is charged with one count of wire fraud which carries with it a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars. The aggravated identity theft charge carries with it a mandatory consecutive sentence of 2 years behind bars.
