Rymir Satterthwaite, a 31-year-old man who claims that rapper Jay-Z – whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter – is his father, is the plaintiff in a lawsuit against Carter, accusing him of using shady practices to avoid taking a DNA test to prove or disprove his paternity. Having gone through years of litigation against the mogul, Satterthwaite and his former guardian have brought the paternity case back into the public eye by commenting on another lawsuit to hit the famous record producer alleging that he was party to the rape of a 13-year-old girl in 2000.

The paternity case entails a years-long battle involving Satterthwaite, his late mother Wanda, and his former legal guardian, Dr. Lillie Coley. Satterthwaite maintains that Carter has repeatedly refused to take the paternity test because Satterthwaite’s mother was underage at the time he was conceived. He also argues that legal resources at Carter’s disposal allowed him to fraudulently avoid taking a paternity test.

In the lawsuit against Carter, Satterthwaite says that his “rights were violated through fraudulent court actions,” arguing that “sealed records, wrongful sanctions, and obstruction of their legal proceedings” have prevented him from receiving DNA results that would prove or disprove whether Carter is his biological father.

Through the years, Satterthwaite maintains that he is not after the results for fame or other nefarious purposes. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he shared, “My late mother, Wanda, was just 16 years old when she became pregnant with me, and for years I have sought clarity about my identity. This is not about greed or spectacle – it’s about uncovering the truth and ensuring all parties are held accountable.”

Satterthwaite explains, “I really want to resolve this, I want to resolve this and get this matter done. I really do. I don’t want any money. I just want the truth.”

In a sworn affidavit Wanda wrote when she was alive, she explained that she met Carter in 1992 through her friend Kaleesha Allen who is listed as an eyewitness to their friendship. Wanda explained that she and Carter had protected sex but that the protection failed. She explains, “Shawn asked me to leave with him, but I told him I could not because my mother would be upset. I never saw him again until [a] year later on television but still had no idea of his real name until later and did not know how to reach him.”

Satterthwaite’s lawsuit is requesting that court documents be unsealed. He is also asking the court to issue a "declaratory judgment" to confirm that both his rights and the rights of his late mother were violated. He is also seeking compensation for the emotional distress caused by the decade-long legal battle.

The lawsuit accuses several judges including Deborah Silverman Katz and Charles W. Dortch Jr., of misrepresenting the facts of his case and allowing false claims that favored Carter. Satterthwaite also says that the court imposed non-existent gag orders that obstructed him from compelling Carter to take a paternity test.

Satterthwaite also recognized Carter’s silence on the case. He shares, “Despite my efforts, Mr. Carter has never once addressed these claims—whether to deny or acknowledge paternity."

The latest legal troubles placed on Carter’s doorstep have come in the form of a civil lawsuit where the Roc Nation founder is facing allegations made by a woman who says she was raped by disgraced music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs when she was underage and that Carter was in the room when the sexual assault took place.

The sexual assault allegations naming Carter were uncovered in early December, and Carter issued a scathing statement discrediting the accusation just hours after the claims were made public.

Although the two cases are unrelated, Satterthwaite has chosen to comment on the rape allegations against Carter, specifically directing his comments to the way in which Carter has responded to the lawsuit by discrediting the plaintiff. As Satterthwaite told the Daily Mail, “It is both heartbreaking and frustrating to see Mr Carter respond to allegations with such deflection and attacks.”

In a published statement, Carter said, “My only heartbreak is for my family,” referring to the upheaval in his home life brought about by the allegations and the effect they will have on his children. Relating Carter’s situation to his own, Satterthwaite has turned those comments upside down, saying, “If Mr. Carter values the ideals of honor and protecting children, as he claims in his letter, he should step forward with transparency.”

At the same time, Satterwhaite’s former legal guardian issued a statement of her own explaining that Carter’s statement defending himself against the accusations was “deeply unsettling.”

Dr. Coley shared in part “As the former legal guardian of my godson, Rymir Satterthwaite, I have firsthand experience navigating years of allegations of fraud and misconduct in cases involving Mr. Carter and his legal team.”

She defended Satterthwaite’s late mother saying, “Her story deserves to be heard, and her name must not be forgotten. Let us all remember to say her name: Wanda Satterthwaite.”
