Police Officer Involved in Detainment of Tyreek Hill Placed on Administrative Leave Pending Investigation
Tyreek Hill, a star wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, was handcuffed and placed face down on a street outside Hard Rock Stadium early on Sunday morning. The incident occurred after Hill was stopped for speeding and reckless driving before the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The arrest, which was captured on video by fans and quickly circulated on the internet, has led to an internal investigation by the Miami-Dade Police Department and the temporary removal of one officer from active duty.
According to Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels, the internal affairs investigation was initiated to review the conduct of the officers involved. The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome.
In addition to Hill, his teammate Calais Campbell, pulled over after seeing the altercation occur in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, he was also briefly detained.
The legal basis for Hill’s detention involves charges of reckless driving and driving without a license, as reported by Hill’s agent. While these are serious offenses, the proportionality of the police response, including the use of handcuffs and the manner of Hill's detainment, is under scrutiny.
