The notorious real estate scion, Robert Durst, 78, is facing charges related to the death of his first wife, Kathie Durst.

This latest turn of events in the Durst saga comes after State Police investigator Joseph Becerra filed a complaint charging Robert Durst with the death of his first wife. Becerra filed the criminal complaint in Lewisboro, New York, last Tuesday, with officials confirming the complaint on Friday.

Following the news of the charges, a lawyer for Kathie Durst’s family put out a statement that read, “Robert Durst has now been formally charged with the murder of Kathleen McCormack Durst. We are very happy with this development. At this time, however, we will not be making any further comments until the grand jury process is completed.”

Kathie Durst was Kathleen McCormick in 1971 when she first met Durst. At the time, she was 19 years old and working as a dental hygienist. Although Durst was nine years her senior, the pair shared a romance that spanned over a decade with nearly nine of those years married. When Kathie was 29 and in her last year of medical school, she disappeared without a trace. In 2017, her family filed to have her declared legally dead. Her body has never been recovered.

This latest allegation against Durst comes just one week after Durst was sentenced to life behind bars for the 2000 murder of his best friend, Susan Berman. Jurors found Durst guilty of killing Berman in an attempt to silence her for knowing too much about Kathie Durst’s disappearance. Despite the guilty verdict, Durst maintains that he did not kill Berman.

The tale surrounding Durst is one that is complicated and filled with bizarre twists, many of which have been documented in real-time through the hit HBO docu-series, “The Jinx.” In the docuseries, producers shed light on new evidence of Durst’s involvement in his first wife’s death. Long after production, the producers of the docuseries came across a recording in which Durst seemingly admits to the crimes. “There it is. You’re caught… What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course,” Durst can be heard saying to himself off-camera.

Just over a year after killing Berman, Durst went into hiding where he disguised himself as a deaf woman living in Galveston, Texas. During his time in hiding, Durst killed an elderly neighbor in his apartment complex, Morris Black. Durst dismembered Black and spread his body parts all around Galveston Bay. When Durst stood trial for the murder, he took a plea deal and was acquitted on the grounds that he acted in self-defense. As part of the plea, Durst was sentenced to three years in jail for two counts of bond jumping and one count of evidence tampering.

After finishing his sentence, Durst went back to prison for stints of time after violating his probation.

Durst has long denied any involvement in Kathie’s death but has speculated that maybe drugs were to blame. The complaint filed by Becerra, although short, explains that grounds for the allegation can be found in files in New York and Los Angeles jurisdictions along with “conversations with numerous witnesses and observations of defendant’s recorded interviews and court testimony in related proceedings.”

Durst is currently at a Los Angeles hospital battling the coronavirus. According to his authorities, Durst is on a ventilator. Durst is battling several other health issues as well. His lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, made public the news of Durst’s coronavirus infection and explained that Durst’s “health deteriorated over the weeks of the trial.” DeGuerin added, “On Thursday, he looked like death warmed over.”
