Russell Simmons, a notable figure in the rap and hip-hop music scene of the 1990s, is currently facing a federal lawsuit accusing him of rape with the allegations brought forth by a former executive at Def Jam Recordings, the influential label he co-founded with producer Rick Rubin.

The plaintiff, known as "Jane Doe," is described as a former senior music executive and video producer at Def Jam. The lawsuit filed on Tuesday claims that her career progression was hindered by Simmons' alleged harassment during the 1990s. According to the complaint, Simmons' behavior, described as "assaultive," detrimentally impacted Doe's career at Def Jam, despite her initial professional relationship with him.

The lawsuit alleges an incident where Simmons invited Doe to his apartment in New York under the guise of approving a new video. However, the situation turned aggressive, with Simmons allegedly pinning her down on a bed and proceeding to rape her, despite her repeated objections.

Following the assault, Doe experienced significant mental health struggles, including panic attacks, depression, and anxiety, which impaired her ability to perform her job duties. Moreover, the complaint outlines instances of repeated harassment by Simmons at Def Jam's Manhattan offices, including invasive behavior and unwanted sexual advances.

This lawsuit is part of a larger pattern of legal actions initiated under New York's Adult Survivors Act (ASA), which temporarily suspended the statute of limitations for sexual assault claims. During the ASA's effective period, from November 24, 2022, to November 24, 2023, individuals were able to utilize the one-year window to seek legal recourse for sexual assault and unwanted sexual contact in the workplace.

However, it remains unclear whether the lawsuit can proceed under the ASA or under subsequent legislation, such as the Gender-Motivated Violence Act, which addresses crimes of violence against women.

Simmons has already confronted allegations of rape and sexual assault in 2017, which prompted his resignation from multiple leadership roles he once occupied. Specifically, he tendered his resignation from key positions within his entertainment conglomerate, Rush Communications and relinquished his involvement with Def Jam Recordings.

Simmons has vehemently denied all previous allegations.

Jane Doe is pursuing compensation in the form of unspecified general, punitive, and economic damages. These damages are intended to cover various losses, including loss of employment, missed business opportunities, and lost wages. Additionally, she is seeking compensation for injuries she claims to have suffered due to the alleged incident.
