Wife Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit After Husband Electrocuted in Resort Hot Tub
A vacation to mark the start of summer turned into a nightmare after a couple was shocked and electrocuted while in a hot tub at a Mexico resort. Now, Lizzette Zambrano of El Paso County, Texas, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the resort and vacation rental companies Casago, LLC, Casago International, LLC, and High Desert Travel, Inc. as defendants for the untimely death of her husband.
35-year-old Lizzette Zambrano and her husband, 43-year-old Jorge Guillen were at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Sonora, Mexico, when she says her husband was “exposed to an electrical current in the water” upon entering the hot tub.
Zambrano recounted the horrific events in her lawsuit, explaining, “Jorge immediately keeled over into the tub and was taken under the surface of the water.” Zambrano would go on to watch “her husband immediately collapse.” Zambrano and others attempted to pull her husband out of the water but were overtaken by the electrical shocks.
“Patrons attempted to assist, grabbing a shepherd’s cross and other items to attempt to get Jorge’s body,” the lawsuit describes. “However, the metal from the objects carried the electrical current and began shocking the rescuers.”
Zambrano was also severely shocked, and a video of the incident shows bystanders performing CPR on an individual believed to be Zambrano. Zambrano was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries. Her husband died due to his injury.
The complaint accuses the “operators, managers, and possessors” of the resort of being “grossly negligent,” which resulted in the death of Guillen. While Zambrano’s husband was continually shocked and drowning, it took Casago staff ten minutes to “finally avail themselves and began to assist in rescuing Jorge,” the complaint accuses.
Casago LLC, issued a statement that read in part, “We are devastated by what has occurred and our hearts are with the family and the victims of this terrible incident.” However, they pointed the blame at the condo resort’s homeowners’ association.
Their statement averred that the HOA is “responsible for all common areas, including the maintenance of the swimming pool, hot tubs, and grounds.” Their statement adds, “Casago, a vacation rental company, is not involved in any management or maintenance of the resort. Regarding this incident, our involvement ends at the individual condo reservation.”
Zambrano is seeking more than $1 million in damages. In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, she expressed, "I want somebody to take accountability for what happened to my husband and myself."
